Happy 20th Birthday Hollyoaks!

The hit Channel 4 show Hollyoaks is celebrating its 20th birthday this week, and to celebrate the occasion the producers have created an intense week for fans with one star guaranteed to lose their life (we won’t tell you who in case you don’t know yet) and the on-going dramas involving the various families and enemies of the Cheshire village, especially the on-going Royle vs Roscoe feud.

It might not have received the plaudits that the other soaps get, mostly because of the time the show airs and the fact that it targets a younger audience than Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders, but some of the storylines have received widespread media recognition for discussing topics that the others won’t touch. For instance, we’ve seen a gay wedding on Hollyoaks when John Paul McQueen married Ste Hay, the first ever to air on a British soap, and even a highly controversial male rape scene back in 2000.

Of course, a soap wouldn’t be a soap without a few explosions and a couple of murders here or there, and who could forget the recent train crash on the day of Porsche and Lockie’s wedding when Carmel McQueen was killed and Sienna and Maxine were stuck in their car on the train line?

The show has been a long-standing favourite for a lot of people with many remembering their University days sat around watching Channel 4 after lectures, then flicking straight over to E4 to watch the next episode because, obviously, 24 hours is just too long to wait!! In our own way of saying Happy Birthday Hollyoaks we created this infographic that takes a look back across the past 20 years with some of the longest-serving stars, the most popular members of the cast on social media and even the characters who have killed the most people (it all goes on in this small village!)
