Well, we’re not going to pretend that we don’t love Eurovision! We are Great British Bingo after all, and we have a not very secret desire to see the UK win the competition.
Even though we know that Eurovision politics will probably mean that this year’s act Electro Velvet won’t win (update: Electro Velvet didn’t fare too well, finishing 24th with only 5 points!) . It’s interesting to note that the UK have been historically quite successful in Eurovision with its 58 entries. But the last No. 1 was Katrina and the Waves with “Love Shine A Light” in 1997. Since the turn of the century, we’ve only been in the top 10 two times.
However, we have been in every contest apart from the first one in 1956 (we sunmitted our entry too late!) and the 1957 competition, and in the time have finished first five times. UK’s entries probably suffer from being too “good” these days, not the kitsch, fun songs that tend to be favoured.
So we’re not hopeful that there will be more Lulus and Bucks Fizzes round the corner but we’ll still be playing this wonderful Eurovision bingo card tonight. Whether it’s favouritism, backstabbing, terrible dance routines, or wardrobe malfunctions, we know we won’t be disappointed.
